The problem, in plain English
Town water in South East Queensland is safe to drink, but plenty of bayside households are not happy with how it tastes. Chlorine is the usual complaint, along with the occasional earthy taste after heavy rain when the treatment plant is working harder.
Sediment is the other one. After a water main break or works in the street, fine grit and rust particles come through the line and end up in kettles, ice makers, tap aerators and washing machine inlet screens. Over time that grit wears out tap cartridges and shortens the life of appliances.
Most people respond by buying bottled water or a benchtop jug, which is expensive, endless and only ever fixes the water at one bench.

How DK Plumbing fixes it
We install both whole home and under sink filtration, and we help you pick between them based on what is actually bothering you rather than upselling a system you do not need.
A whole home unit is plumbed in at the mains, usually near the meter or the front of the house, so every shower, tap, toilet and appliance is running filtered water. It is the right call for sediment, chlorine and protecting your hot water system and washing machine.
An under sink unit treats drinking and cooking water at the kitchen, with a dedicated filtered tap or a three-way mixer. It uses a finer cartridge than a whole home unit, so it is ideal for taste. Plenty of homes run both.
How the installation works
We isolate the water, cut into the supply line and fit the housing with its own isolation valves so cartridge changes never mean shutting off the whole house. Whole home units are mounted where they are accessible for servicing, not tucked away behind a garden bed. Under sink units are fitted inside the cabinet with the tap drilled and sealed properly through the benchtop. Most installs are done in a couple of hours and the water is back on before we leave.
Maintenance and filter change schedule
Cartridges are consumables. Sediment and carbon cartridges typically need replacing every 6 to 12 months depending on household size and water quality. Leave them too long and flow rate drops off while the filter stops doing much at all. We write the install date on the housing, tell you exactly which cartridges yours takes, and can book the change into a regular maintenance visit so it is not one more thing to remember.
Why act now
- Filtered water at every tap costs less over time than bottled water or benchtop jugs.
- Sediment shortens the life of tap cartridges, hot water systems and appliances.
- Any filter plumbed into mains supply needs a licensed plumber to stay compliant.
- Overdue cartridges kill your water pressure and stop filtering properly.
Common questions
What is the difference between a whole home and an under sink filter?
A whole home filter treats every outlet in the house, including showers, laundry and hot water. An under sink filter treats drinking and cooking water at one tap. Many homes end up with both: a whole home unit for sediment and chlorine, plus a finer under sink cartridge for drinking water.
How often do the filter cartridges need changing?
As a general rule, sediment and carbon cartridges are changed every 6 to 12 months depending on your water use. We label the install date on the housing and can remind you when it is due.
Does a water filter need to be installed by a plumber?
Any filter plumbed into your mains supply should be installed by a licensed plumber. It involves cutting into the potable water line and requires correct backflow protection and isolation valves to keep the system compliant and safe.
Will a filter fix chlorine taste and sediment?
Yes. Carbon filtration removes the chlorine taste and smell, and sediment cartridges catch the fine grit and rust particles that come through after mains work or a water main break.
